4-H CLUBs…were very popular when I was a young boy. They were principally agricultural groups or clubs where kids raised livestock to show. But it has grown into much more today. I have lost touch, but back then, these kids were some of the finest young people in any community. The H’s stand for Head-Heart-Hands-Health.
4-H is delivered by Cooperative Extension – a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. Kids complete hands-on projects in areas like health, science, agriculture and citizenship, in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles. Kids experience 4-H in every county and parish in the country; through in-school and after-school programs, school and community clubs and 4-H camps.
A few years back, without any conscious reflection on these clubs, I was led by the Spirit to develop a short Biblical study on the 4 H’s in scripture and the process we go through as new and maturing believers. The series was entitled the 4-H Commission. And yes, I was influenced by the 4-H Club letters. But mine differed just a tiny bit. Head-Heart-Hands-Holy Spirit. Let’s explore it.
Headthe gospel message of salvation by grace through faith first enters into one’s mind to convince, convict and convert a non-believer of his/her need for a savior. The word of God comes into the head through the ears. “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ”(Rom. 10:17).
Heart–the word does its work in the mind, and then it should travel a short distance to the heart. It is that central region of a man where the will and emotion reside. Skip Ryan once shared that–“what goes deepest to the heart goes widest to the world”. Passion is what makes the heart pump! “Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure” (Psa. 19:8). “I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart” (Psa. 40:8). The heart full of grace and mercy seeks to live out its faith in tangible ways.
Hands–are the means by which you extend your passions of the heart. Hands, feet, mouth-all are used to extend the kingdom of God at home and abroad. How has God gifted you? Where does he desire you to bear fruit? None of his gifts is by accident. Meditate on this. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:10).
Holy Spirit–is the person of the Trinity who occupies all three of the above and orchestrates the Father’s and Son’s will for all creation, for you. He is active in your salvation, your passions, your service and worship. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8)
Have you ever focused on Paul’s prayer for the Ephesian church, especially the benediction? Meditate on the role of the Spirit’s power. He is the one who accomplishes all the Father and Son direct. You are simply obedient vessels through whom he works.
“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith-that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever.” Amen. (Eph. 3:14-21)
You have been invited to join God’s 4-H club. He has destined you to do mighty works. You get the joy and the Trinity gets the glory! What a great club! Don’t you want everyone to join?
