America

AMERICA...is not heaven! ! In the Kevin Costner movie, Field of Dreams, the question was asked, “Is this heaven?” The answer was, “No, this is Iowa.”
Well, I have heard many times in my life the expression; ‘America is a little bit of heaven on earth.’ I count it a gracious privilege to have been chosen to be a part of this country. Unarguably, it is one of the greatest nations ever to exist. Its form of government was carved out of decades, if not centuries, of experienced hardships by mostly Europeans. The tyranny of evil dictators or democracies led them to draft a government of laws reflecting Godly values to allow the individual and families to prosper and live in peace.  The U. S. is a Republic, and it functions so well when led by moral leaders. Such has not been the case in recent years. I hate to tarnish your dreams.
But so many live as if our country were ‘heaven on earth’, even believers. We work diligently to build our own kingdoms, our own mansions. Jesus said there were many mansions in heaven, freely given, not earned. And even promised he was going there to prepare them for his people. I would fathom a guess; far, far more amazing than any mind could imagine. Today at our church class, one of our lady members said to me–‘how can people in Dallas build any larger homes?’
Jesus said; ‘I have come to bring life, abundant life’. For sure he
was not talking about the ‘abundance of things’. Truth is, knowing him
is life abundant.
Remember the rich fool in Luke 12? “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses” (vs. 15). Jesus concluded with this warning. “A man said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”‘ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ “So is he who lays up a treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God” (vss.17-21).
What about peace that we seek? Our nation is divided as never before. Families are broken, stress is high and the news media fans the flame of unrest and discontent. Real and fake news abound. It is all designed by the enemy to keep us fearful, discontent and even angry. From where I sit, it is working. Paul said;

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6,7).
Are you dwelling in this kind of peace in your life, your family’s, your business, or your ministry? America is the most influential peace keeping nation in our world today. So why is there so much unrest in our lives, in our nation? If we are putting our hope in ‘America’, we are much to be pitied.
We have been promised the hope of peace and prosperity in this great nation. The problem I think is we seek prosperity alone in order to gain peace. God’s kingdom is an upside down one, maybe an inside out one. God never condemns prosperity; he even promotes it. ‘Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls, prosperity within your palaces”‘ (Psa. 122:6). Jesus was/still is the ‘wealthiest’ man that has ever lived, and yet he had no worldly goods. He laid it all down through humility and allowed his Father to deal with his prosperity. He sought his Father’s will, not his. And his peace was boundless. Having just returned from Cuba where prosperity does not abound, once again I experienced the joy and peace in the believers’ lives. It’s a heart issue, not a country issue.
You want it all? Proverbs gives the answer. “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life” (v. 22:4). And I contend that it is acquired daily. “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Mt. 6:33). Are you daily humbling yourself before the Lord, early and earnestly, believing these two promises? It will turn your life upside down–just the way God wants it! May God bless America and the Church in our great country.
