ELEPHANTS and DONKEYS…are two very diverse animals, but did you know both are mammals? Tradition has it that big bad elephants are scared of mice and donkeys are dumber than dirt. Does that remind you of any political parties? Sorta says it all. Just saying! Both are beasts of burden, designed to carry heavy loads. That’s where they differ from politicians. Sorry!
A political cartoonist, Thomas Nast, introduced both symbols of the two parties in the late 1870s. Why they are still the symbols 140+ years later is a mystery and amazing. The philosophies of both parties have changed drastically, but not the symbols.
While the elephant is not named in scripture per se, they were the producers of ivory. Donkeys are mentioned 140 times in the Bible, mostly in the Old Testament. Balaam the son of Boer was actually rebuked by a dumb donkey. Sorta reminds me of the primary debates.
Seriously, there was a significant use of the donkey family in the life of Jesus, the Jewish Messiah and our savior.
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!  Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you soon; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zech. 9:9) And in John 12 we see it fulfilled.
‘Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written; “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt”‘ (Vss. 14,15).
Why a lowly beast of burden, and not a royal steed? Isn’t it obvious; Jesus came as a suffering servant, born in a lowly animal manger. Do you think there may have been donkeys there also? Joseph and Mary arrived on one, and fled to Egypt on the same donkey. The Lord was burdened for His creation. And the use of the donkey spoke volumes! He even had to borrow the colt he used to enter Jerusalem. You see; servants don’t own donkeys!
Everything was designed to place the total focus on Jesus, not anything else. Isn’t that how we should worship Him today? Don’t let anything get in the way of Him and Him alone. Our Presidential primary debates are less about truth and more about show time! Not so with Jesus. His show time will come eventually. There will be a great steed on which He will ride upon His return. You think there is some fanfare in these election rallies, you ain’t seen nothing yet!
But for now, spend time this Easter focusing on Jesus crucified, buried and raised. Aren’t you glad that nothing can hinder your coming to Him with all your burdens? And because He took our burdens upon Himself at Golgotha, He can say with confidence to you and me —
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Mt. 11.28-30).
Both parties’ candidates try to convince you that they are the answer for all that burdens us. Most are well meaning. But none died for you, rose again to bring hope and life to those who believe in Him. No President can do that. Place your trust in the One who places presidents and kings on thrones and removes them as He wills. Donald, Hillary, and all you others; we hope you know this King of kings and Lord of lords. He is the only One who can fulfill all the promises you are making!
