EVIL…looms around virtually every corner. It is unpredictable, like a thief  in the   night. It is hidden from sight. Sometimes you can sense it. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time can influence its execution.

Why is it so prevalent? Sin gave it permission to exist, to occupy and influence all of creation. It did not take long after the first parents disobeyed to see the results. Do you think Abel suspected his blood brother, Cain, of having the desire to kill him-out of jealousy and anger?

What caused the shooter to kill twelve unsuspecting people at the Washington D.C. Navy Ship Yards-without notice, provocation or even suspicion? How about the Ft. Hood massacre, Columbine, Sandy Hook, Boston Marathon massacre, and lest we never forget 9/11 and fifty+ subsequent terrorist attacks on U.S. assets here and around the world, including Benghazi. Some are isolated grievances, while others stem from misguided loyalty to a religious/political ideology or country. Many think that better education, higher living standards or bigger governments with their welfare programs will stem the tide of violence and evil. Gun control doesn’t work miracles. Disarming the populous and leaving the weapons to the government and the criminal element will not stem the tide of evil. Our forefathers knew that. Look no further than Mexico, a disarmed populace. Is gun control really working there?

Where is the church, the Body of Christ, in all this? What influence does Christianity have in a world that grows more evil with every passing day, at least in America? Or the media, which has a powerful voice in the actions of its constituency? Do you think the movie and video games’ industries are creating monsters, or are they only reflecting the heart and desire of its customers? Who’s to blame? And how can we turn this thing around?

First and foremost, evil originates in the heart of mankind. Mark 7 explains this well. ‘And He (Jesus) said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile man”‘ (vss. 20-23). Do you think He missed anything? Sounds like that covers it all. The heart of man is evil. Why? Because once sin (separation from God) entered in through disobedience, man alone became incapable of practicing anything good. “There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one” (Rom. 3:10-12). But understand that our battle is not against people, but against the evil one (Satan) and the powers of darkness that control the heart and mind of those who perform evil acts.

The Challenge

Manmade solutions cannot and will not work, ever! Because they do not address or resolve the core issue–SIN! They might put a temporary tourniquet or band- aid on the wound, but this won’t heal where major surgery is required. Man has to be reconciled to God! Since it is a heart issue, only God can perform this operation. And He did this already for man on the cross and the empty tomb. We can know about a great surgeon and his expertise, but until we avail ourselves of his services, we can die.

All of us reading this are capable of all forms of evil, short of the redeeming work of Christ. “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit” (I Pet. 3:18). That being said, we all must take hold of this truth, by faith, for our own salvation. And then we need to share it with whomever the Spirit leads to us. The defining question for you and me is; do we even care?

And for us who are believers, how do we live victorious lives void of fear of what lies around the corner? The Spirit gives us the answer through Paul in his letter to the Ephesians. Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (6:11 & 13).

Evil reigns when good men do nothing! If you know the Great Surgeon, then recommend, even introduce Him to a lost and evil-prone world! Cancer can be cured; so can evil in the hearts of men! Do you know someone who is lost, living without Jesus? Sadly, without Him, they may just become the next mass murderer!
