FOUNDATIONS…are essential to life in many ways. We all relate to a house and its need for a solid foundation. It might be a slab, pier and beam or post tension, depending on the soil condition. My first several homes were actually supported by wood posts. This was common in the country. Major commercial or industrial structures have elaborate foundations extending deep into the ground. Most times the piers are set on solid bedrock for stability. I find it interesting that many of the original buildings in New Orleans were actually supported by stacked cotton bales since it is below sea level and this apparently that met the demands of the day.

Unstable soil can be found it various parts of the Dallas area. Irving has a significant amount and the foundations have to be

specifically designed to handle the shifting earth. Sandy soils are especially difficult. I remember one large residence in Frisco where the slab buckled up from underneath and could have destroyed the occupied home. This can happen anywhere. Bridges, skyscrapers, oceanic oil rigs and monuments have unique foundation systems to meet the demands of earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes, mountain slides, even heavy winds and rain, not counting the varying soil issues. The Northeast just experienced these in a big way courtesy of Hurricane Sandy. Mega billions of damage! Good engineering is so necessary.

Nations are built on fou

ndations of belief and personal preference. Kids are directed to get a solid educational foundation for their future. Even economies have a foundation that supports or collapses them. While recently in Jerusalem and varying parts of Israel,I could not help but be amazed at the size of the solid stone boulders and foundations dating back centuries, even millennia. The wall around Old Jerusalem was magnificent.

Our lives are based on some form of foundation; spiritually, morally and/or ethically. Religious beliefs or disbeliefs shape our humanity and our eternity. The Bible speaks volumes on the subject of foundations. When Job was having his huge pity party before God, the Lord addressed him this way. “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements…To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone…” (Job 38:4-6)? So, even the created earth has its foundation, from the very beginning. Makes sense! And according toPsalm 104, it is an eternal one. “You who laid the foundations of the earth, so that it should not be moved forever…” (v:5).

But what about all the things that seem to be collapsing all around us? What are we to do; to whom do we turn? The psalmist asks and answers this question to instruct and encourage us. “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? The Lord is in His holy temple, the Lord’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men. The Lord tests the righteous, but the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates”(Psa. 11:3-5). Do you sense the very foundations of America are eroding away? The greed in business and politics, dependency on government as opposed to working, families failing, killing the unborn, unholy human unions, drugs, violence, gangs, immorality of every nature are chipping away at our very foundation. Even the church is becoming irrelevant, with the culture influencing it as opposed to the church impacting the culture. But as we see, while we might be snoozing, God is not asleep. He is wide awake!

“I will lift my eyes to the hills-from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep” (Psa. 121:1-4). A heated election just concluded in America. Politicians are not our answer, God is. He set the foundations and they are secure and eternal. “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war may rise against me, in this I will be confident” (Psa. 27:1-3).

Rejoice! “For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than is laid, which is Christ Jesus” (I Cor 3:9-11). Christ is our solid foundation. In Him we have help, hope and salvation. He laid the earth’s foundation and He overcame death. What other enemy do we have to fear?   The wise man built his house on the rock (solid foundation) and the floods did not destroy the house. The one built on sand fell. (Mt. 7)

On what foundation have you built your house? Are you wise or foolish? Are you confident or fearful? Go outside; check the foundation. Go from room to room and observe if there are cracks. Is your life secure in Jesus Christ today? If not, contact the Master Builder immediately. He maintains a 24 hour hotline called prayer. The line is never busy. You’ll get right through. Oh, and He provides an eternal warranty. His foundations do not fail! Anything else is shifting sand.
