LAWS…control our universe. Some say ‘laws are made to be broken.  I see that  every day on the Dallas North Tollway. Most everything we do is governed in some manner by laws. Traffic, food preparation, sanitation, labor, bankruptcy, criminal, consumer rights, corporate laws, just to name a few. There is natural law, like gravity or E=MC2 and even mathematical laws.

Civil and criminal laws keep the courts in America jammed. Attorneys love them.  The more, the $merrier$! International, federal, state, city, county-you name it; we got ’em! Now environmental laws are a huge item. Everywhere you turn you find yourself bumping into a law. Civil Rights laws are lightning rods being used to effect change, for everyone; some good and some bad. Even in our homes, parents have their sets of laws or rules, providing freedom or consequences.

All laws must have a form of power for enforcement. Otherwise, everyone would do as they pleased, which leads to anarchy and chaos. I see a lot of that going on, don’t you?

There ought to be a moral conscience behind each and every law. The very first spoken law or commandment was in the Garden of Eden. Obey and live in freedom or suffer the consequences! ‘And the Lord God commanded the man, “you are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die”‘ (Gen. 2:16-17).  Decision time for Adam and Eve!

America, like Israel, had the initial basic    foundational laws for governance. The  Ten Commandments were laws given by God through Moses to Israel for all time. They actually apply to every created being for all time. God is their moral conscience!

Israel had its ceremonial laws, designed for worship. But, they kept on adding more and more legal restrictions to the point that an ordinary Jew was hamstrung.  Don’t we see this in America? Legislation being poured out of every legislative body and court in the land; freedoms restricted, even eliminated! Always trying to bring fairness and justice as it may be defined or redefined from time to time; or perhaps just control, power or subjection.

My only trip to parts of India exposed me to a nation with no traffic laws. It is survival of the fittest, bravest, craziest. The game of ‘chicken’ had to have originated there! It will definitely enhance your prayer life. Mayhem rules! Or should I say, the one with the most guts and loudest horn wins! The worst and best in people is revealed on the highways there. God knew that man needed laws to control runaway immorality in a sinful heart. But laws only reveal the need for something or someone far more powerful than we are if we are ever to attain true, lasting freedom.

But the good news is this. John records Jesus saying; “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (Jn. 8:36). So, how does that work in a culture that is so law-crazy and litigious? We live in a sinful and sin-filled world, under its constant influence; but in Christ, we are free from, while living within it.  Look at this. “But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world” (Gal. 6:14). So, when Christ died as our propitiation (atonement for sin), grace became the crucible in which a believer (one who has put their trust in Christ alone) lives. Like wearing an oxygen mask in a smog-filled environment!

“Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith” (Rom. 3:27). Neither our works (good deeds) nor the law(s) allow us to live in freedom; only by faith in the grace of Christ’s death.

In Galatians 5 we see true, unrestricted freedom. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law” (vss. 22-23).  The indwelling Spirit effects these fruit in us, mainly through our trials and sufferings, many caused by unfair, burdensome and biased laws.  You can’t pass enough laws to make me become like these fruit.  Only the Lord can accomplish this in us.

Thankfully, God set laws in motion for His universe.  The sun rises as predicted each day!  The Earth is set on an axis and rotates, hanging in mid-air!  There is freedom in that knowledge.  And we can also look at the cross of Jesus and the empty tomb and be secure in our faith. “But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life” (Rom. 6:22).  Freedom through slavery!  Seems odd doesn’t it?  But friends, that is eternal Freedom!! I hope you are experiencing it!
