Seed

SEED...an embryonic plant enclosed in a protective outer covering. Simple enough. Or, for you more ‘heady’ types; it is a mature plant ovule containing an embryo. To me, it is life at its very beginning. It is hard to imagine. A large end result in that little ol’ seed! And to add more drama to the scenario, the seed has to die before the end product can live. Just like God to have all the bases covered. And to think, he produced all the original plants with reproducing seeds to ensure their earthly reproduction and existence. Actually, he spoke them into existence, originating in his mind. Try that on for size!
Reminds me of the story of a brilliant scientist who dedicated his entire life to find a way to produce life. He was so excited. He told God about it, and God encouraged the scientist to show him the process. The scientist reached down and grabbed a handful of dust. God stopped him right there and said “Son, you have to use your own dust.” A disappointing day in that scientist’s life to say the least!
Scientists and horticulturists today continually create incredible food products, fruits and flowers from plants. Cross-pollination and grafting limbs of varying species are common. But all of this lab research and experimentation began with God’s design. We see many hybrids and for sure, and yet, organic is the rage. Food products are being produced much more efficiently and in greater quantities than ever before to meet the demand of growth in world population. But still, there are millions of people who go each day without enough food. Way too many starving children!
The sadness from any form of starvation brings me to tears. Many people and agencies go to great lengths to get nutrition to poverty stricken areas. One that comes to mind is “Feed My Starving Children”. An incredible organization! Making the most out of what seems to be little. But it is working. Agencies like this are born out of the burden for the poor. “What goes deepest to the heart goes widest to the world.”
‘From seed to sheaves’ came to mind as I was reflecting on the Psalms recently. While life-sustaining food is a result of planting seeds and harvesting the results, I sense the Psalmist was talking about more, much more. Listen to what he says. “Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy” (v. 126:5). What are they sowing? And why in tears? He goes on to say; “He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him” (v.6).
Today, I had the privilege of teaching twelve men who will be counseling the men that come to Birth Choice to decide on life or death for the unborn child they have fathered. On the same campus, only a few hundred feet away is a Women’s Surgery Center where it is reported that 50 abortions are performed daily. People are outside this clinic praying and ‘weeping’ over this horrific and tragic situation. The people at Birth Choice are also ‘weeping’ over the mothers and the children they are trying to save. I think that is a true illustration of what the Psalmist was saying. Are our hearts breaking for the hungry, the defenseless and the lost?
The seed of the gospel is at the core of the Psalmist’s thoughts. Do you care that people are dying daily without the opportunity to receive eternal life, even physical life? If so, then we will weep for and with them as we take the message of the gospel to a deceived and dying world. You must look at your prayers. Are you weeping…are you? Or is it business as usual, ho-hum, or ‘I-could-care-less’ attitude? God weeps over the lost for sure. It is his desire that all men be saved.

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Pet. 3:9).

Do you see God’s heart for the starving, lost and unborn? Does yours match his? Will you spend your life ‘going forth weeping, sowing the seeds of the gospel’? If so, you will be rejoicing eternally because you will be bringing your sheaves into the Kingdom of Heaven, into God’s storehouse. You know-the gospel of Christ IS the ONLY answer for anyone in any situation.
Go forth, weeping, armed with the  seed of the gospel message.  He’ll handle the increase!
