SOLAR ECLIPSES…are very periodic and a phenomena. On Monday, across America, one such event took place from Oregon to S. Carolina. It has been described as the “Great American Eclipse”. The last one seen in the United States was in 1979 and the next total eclipse will be in 2024.
I didn’t buy the special eclipse glasses. And I wonder how many were duped and got fake ones, hopefully not to the detriment of their eyesight. Major events were held in places where the full impact could be viewed.
You have read enough already about the issues and I would bore you with what I know that might add anything to your knowledge. However, I do have a memory to share. In grade school, I participated in an experiment with a pinhole in a piece of cardboard, allowing you to view the outline on a piece of white paper. Fascinating! Guess what, I did it again on Monday. It still works. A colander bowl works too. I also saw a girl viewing it in her homemade Cocoa Puff box mechanism.
During the eclipse my daughter, Becky, noticed a several minute pause in the sound of the locust, and a squirrel totally still on the ground for 17 minutes. It was almost like they were worshipping.
Renzo, one of my grandsons, viewed it in Great Barrington, MA through eclipse glasses. For me personally, the most intriguing were the images that were created on a sidewalk under some Bradford Pear trees. The photo is shown here. Many, many small eclipse figures were the result.
Scientific and religious implications are widespread. Apocalyptical forecasts always accompany eclipses. Many believe America is destined for judgment, possibly of a major order. History has proved many judgments by God of varying nature associated with eclipses and other heavenly signs. One only has to read Revelation to see what accompanies the Day of the Lord.
We know we live in the ‘end times’. That has been well documented since Jesus came to earth and returned to his Father. Scripture has more than 2,300 references to signs. The Jews were always requesting, even demanding, signs from Jesus. It went something like this. “Give me a sign and some great wonder and I’ll probably believe.” He knew their hearts well enough to know it would make little difference.
  • Will this weeks eclipse turn your heart to Jesus, in a new and profound way?
  • Will you be led to repentance?
  • Will you be more concerned for the lost who are going to hell?
  • Will you be more servant-minded to your family, friends, enemies, the poor and needy?
  • Are you now more prepared for Jesus’ second coming?
Jesus taught his disciples to watch for the signs as evidence of impending, significant events that have all been foretold. But the one in scripture that speaks to me loudest is in Mark and the other gospels.
“But be on guard; I have told you things beforehand. But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And then he will send out his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven….But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father….Therefore stay awake….lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake”  (Mark 13:23-37).
Total eclipses are awesome, but clearly we should view them with the proper perspective. Use this one as a reminder of God’s great and awesome power to even bring this about for you to see. Knowing he has the power to fulfill all his prophetic warnings and promises is a call to reflectrepentrefocus and rededicate. I suspect no one slept through the eclipse, at least those in its direct path. How much more so as we view the totality of scripture.
All things will be fulfilled! It’s a given!   Do you see it? Do you believe it?
