TODAY…is like no other day. Grasp that truth! There has never been one or will there ever be one. Today is special; it is the one in which you are living. You never know in advance what this day holds. You know what happened yesterday and earlier. Today represents everything you possess and are. It is a gift that was not promised. So, for the most part, it is a surprise in a good way. Sorta like Cracker Jacks! What is in the box? What does Today hold?
“THIS is the day the Lord has made, may we rejoice and be glad in it.”  You and I did not make Today, He did. It has purpose, you have purpose–Today! How many times have you put off that phone call, that visit to a needy friend or family member? Always presuming there will be tomorrow. Or you’ve said, ‘can’t wait till tomorrow’. When all along, Today needs to be lived fully. ‘I don’t have time for my quiet time with the Lord Today, I’ll double up tomorrow.’
We live in the false assumption that there will be
a tomorrow, but it has not been promised.
You’ve all heard or used the age-old expression; ‘the pathway to hell is paved with good intentions’. ‘I intended to do or say this or that and wish I had. If I had just taken advantage of the situation when it was in front of me. Oh, how I wish I had shared the gospel with that person God led into my life, but I was just too busy.’
This leads to regrets and anxiety–because we are so
focused on the future or dragged down by our past,
we can’t fully grasp the precious gift of Today.
God has plans for each of you, Today…things he has ordained in eternity past. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Eph.2:10) It requires trust. If He is Sovereign and has ordained Today’s good works for you to do, so why not leave tomorrow to him? It still belongs to him. All He has given you is Today with all the grace, mercy, provisions, opportunities, strength, and whatever else is needed to accomplish Today’s works. Could it be that missing your time with the Lord early in the morning caused a loss of direction and purpose for Today?
This is not to say we don’t make plans. God Himself has a plan for His creation and us as His prized creatures. He is fulfilling that plan one day at a time. Interestingly, He is accomplishing it in and through us. That is the work of His Spirit.
He instructs us in Proverbs. “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps” (v. 16:9). In fact, His plans are to prosper us, certainly not to harm us. That’s love, friends!
In Luke, Jesus was speaking to the congregation in His hometown. He stands and reads from the book of Isaiah. Then He sits down and says, “Today, this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (Lk. 4:21). See, that was His purpose for that day that His Father had ordained for Him to do. Not yesterday, not tomorrow…Today! What if He had decided to brush aside his Father’s wishes and put it off? He grasped the moment! Do you? He accomplished the Father’s will for that day.
There is so much true joy in living one day at a time. It frees us up from the burdens of the past and fears of the future. You will accomplish more, you will be in a better frame of mind and you will be preparing yourself for that Day. And what might that be? It’s the biggie! It’s God’s final judgment and glory! Is that big enough? Listen to this. “when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe” (2 Thess.1:10a).
That Day is promised and is assured. Will you be ready, are you living in anticipation? Will you have lived every day he gave you to its fullest? It begs the question and the challenge–

Are you living Today in light of That day? Can you even imagine the difference it will make as you stand before your Lord–hearing the words-“WELL DONE”? Eternal rewards await! Reflect on that TODAY, and live out every day he grants you. No regrets!
