WONDERS…usually bring amazement. And why not! We spend so much of our lives in the daily routine, all pretty well predictable. It’s referred to as the ‘mundane’; described as ‘lacking interest or excitement, even dull’. Many describe it as a ‘humdrum existence’. Then along comes this occurrence that is unexplainable, even miraculous. It either excites us or frightens us, sometimes both.
Across America this past week millions witnessed a total solar eclipse. That’ll get your attention from your daily routine. Then, many in Northwest Dallas experienced an earthquake. A wake-up call for sure in this part of the world. All that was followed by one of the worst disasters in Texas history. Hurricane Harvey came ashore with Houston and the coastline cities experiencing historic flooding and property damage. As I write this, it is stalled and dumping incredible volumes of rain on that area. The results have been catastrophic. After nearly 50″ of rainfall, nearly 9,000,000,000,000,000 gallons of water have fallen.
The eclipse was exciting, the earthquake was a little disturbing and the hurricane was (is) devastating. I pause to ask. Were the three events somehow connected? Some would say yes, but I’m not sure even though they did take place in a one-week period of time in our country. You decide. These are three wonders, out of the ordinary, not mundane at all.
But should we be surprised? Not at all! Things like this are happening all over the world. We live in the end times when these are suppose to occur. “And there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven” (Lk. 21:11). These are warnings directly from Jesus to his disciples and those listening. Why would he have said it and have the Spirit record it for us if it weren’t monumentally important. Mark in his gospel said: “These are just the beginning of the birth pains” (13:8b). In other words, ‘you ain’t seen nothing yet!’
Jesus’ comments were preceded by this–“Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom” (vs.10). Do you see any of that happening around the world? Even the great division in our own country. A coach can’t lead a prayer on a playing field, with a federal judge upholding it. An Asian man named Robert Lee was replaced by ESPN from a football broadcast in Virginia. Historic statues have been vandalized and desecrated. That doesn’t even address the evil attacks on our President. I strongly believe there is a well-funded, concerted effort to divide and conquer this nation from within.
“So, Bill, what is the answer for us who follow Jesus Christ?” Glad you asked.
Be clothed with the armor of God
Be prayerful
Be watchful/alert
Be prepared and willing to suffer for the gospel
Walk in the Spirit by faith in the midst of what you see
Abound in the work of the Lord
Stay focused on the power of the cross
Be salt, light and leaven in this dark world
Be committed to finish well, and
Keep looking up, you don’t want to miss any of the wonders!
You can’t personally redirect hurricanes, stop earthquakes and heavenly occurrences, but you can change yourself and impact those around you through the power, presence and person of the Holy Spirit. And you can all claim the promise in 2 Chronicles for our nation. “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (vs. 7:14).
Amazing wonders are going to take place until Christ returns. But to me, the greatest of all wonders is the fact that my name is actually written in the Book of Life. Is yours, is your family’s, is your neighbor’s? Heed the signs all around you. By doing so, you will be ready for his return. It’ll be the most glorious wonder ever seen by mankind. ‘He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The grace the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen”‘ (Rev. 22:20-21).
